Artist's CommentsKyra tends to be a fairly relaxed person, but she's generally up to various challenges - anything from fighting and footraces to drinking and belching. She can also be a skilled business person when called upon, having been raised as a trader and merchant. The duffel bag she keeps with her holds her belongings as well as whatever she has to trade or sell at any particular time, and is significantly heavier than she makes it look. While she doesn't cuss excessively, her language can get a bit colorful, and frequently references Moon Elves in a negative manner. Born into a Sand Elf clan, Kyra was raised the same as any Sand Elf child, though being half human she was one of the quicker to age and was deemed an adult by her 30's. Not long after, she had been helping out with a trade when magic users nearby apparently had a problem; what exactly happened is unsure, but a strange sort of explosion resulted in a number of deaths and mutations (mostly fatal) nearby, including a few members of the clan. Of those affected, Kyra was one of few who seemed alright, though a bit in shock. Not wanting to risk things becoming worse the clan was quick to leave, a couple more dying off before they got far. Because of the increased attention that resulted, they were quick to notice when Kyra seemed to quickly be getting sick. Initially she was fatigued, then feverish, and soon she was incoherent and incapable of walking. Part of the clan stayed up that night to attend her, while others couldn't sleep through her moans and occasional screams. Not long before morning she finally quieted down, stopped thrashing, and turned cold. She was thought to be dead, as even a pulse couldn't be found, and so was prepared for burning. As soon as the fire touched her flesh though, Kyra woke and leapt at the first figure that came within her sight, snarling and clawing as others rushed in to restrain her. As the smoke wafted her way, she calmed down again and fell unconscious, later waking up strapped to a board and feeling sick and tingly. More herself again at that point, what had happened was discussed, and it was determined the magic-related explosion had altered her, and she was labeled a demon according to her world's definition. Unsure of how she might act anymore, she was brought as far as the next outpost, given enough supplies to get herself going, and exiled from the clan. Kyra will still spend time with Sand Elves when they are present where she is, and even travel with them, but has chosen not to actually join with any clan, even the one she was previously a part of. She tends to get a bit dodgy when asked about that fact, as she dislikes admitting that she isn't always entirely in control of herself. Despite her past, Kyra is fairly nonchalant, there to enjoy life. She likes a good joke and enjoys a good fight, but dislikes being ordered around. She also dislikes being in a bad mood. Though she's generally pretty blunt, she can be a bit smoother with her words when necessary. Kyra also takes great pride in being a Sand Elf, discounting her human half as separating her from others and rarely referring to herself as a demon. Capable of some magic, though she doesn't often bother as it sometimes makes her queasy; very agile and flexible; remarkably keen senses, some even moreso than regular Elves (night vision, hearing, and smell improved when she turned demon); unnaturally quick and strong; heals abnormally fast; preferred weapons are small blades such as knives and daggers, but as a Sand Elf she's handled others, and she's highly resourceful. When stressed, as when her life seems to seriously be in danger, she seems to become even stronger and faster, but also more animal-like and more likely to burn out. Those known so far include the smoke from plants commonly used for funeral purposes (causes dizziness, disorientation, and eventual unconsciousness), wounds from magic (burns from magic fire or cuts from magically-imbued weapons, for example, will take her significantly longer to recover from), particularly strong smells (makes her nauseous due to keen senses) or loud, high-pitched noises (headache, sometimes disorientation, again from keen senses). Symbols and icons in general don't seem to particularly bother her like most demons, unless they are actually used as weapons, in which case the blow is more painful to her and wounds are like those from magically-imbued items. She also gets a bit nervous and irritable in areas with magical concentrations, and has a more noticeable reaction to moon alignments (on worlds with multiple moons; or full moons on worlds one only one, larger moon) than the average person, becoming more prone to savage behavior. The Sand Elves of Kyra's world are known for their skills in trade, combat, and desert survival, and can be recognized by their pointed ears, very dark skin, and very light hair (yeah, the look about like D&D's Drow). Believed by some to have some trouble telling discerning some colors, they are also known to be fond of bright colors, but to lack much ability in matching things well. While they are generally quite friendly and amiable, few dare to cross a Sand Elf as mercy is far from a strong point among them. Even so, crossbreeding with other races is not uncommon among Sand Elves. They are also known to occasionally practice cannibalism, though it is very rare that they'll kill a person just to eat; it's more of a "waste not" rule among them. The Elves of this world have antlers, though Sand Elves frequently break or saw theirs off to sell; Kyra's human half kept her antlers from ever properly developing, so she has only lumps where hers would have grown in. Her hair color and lighter skin also mark Kyra's human heritage to those who are familiar with Sand Elves. Despite both being types of Elves, Sand Elves and Moon Elves tend to despise each other. (Note: The information here matches up with that at World Only in Dreams, but I'm counting this separately from that as this could screw up the setting there. You are, of course, welcome to check it out. ;D If nothing else, you could learn a little more about Kyra's background.) |
